Down 35-0 in the fourth quarter, Jed Leeper’s Hermann Bearcats were able to put together one last scoring drive capped on the final play of the game by a Kohlt Witthaus to Tayven Hopkins 4-yard touchdown pass.
Roman Martin’s extra point made the final score 35-7 in favor of Sullivan’s Eagles during Four Rivers Conference (FRC) football action Friday night along Interstate 44 in Franklin County.
Trailing 14-0 after one quarter and 21-0 at halftime, Hermann had a tough time containing Sullivan’s ground attack which ran nearly reached 500 yards before the end of the game.
Witthaus led the Bearcats on the ground with 50 yards rushing on 12 carries while he was also 5-14 passing for 59 yards through the air with a touchdown and an interception.
Aiden Eikermann also carried the football eight times for 26 yards rushing for the Bearcats.
Myles Stiers also had a carry for five yards before leaving the game with an injury in the first half.
Hopkins led Hermann receivers with three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively for the Bearcats, Eikermann led the Bearcats with 17 total tackles joined by Trent Chasteen in double figures with 10 total tackles.
Witthaus and Hopkins each added seven total tackles followed by six apiece out of Ashton Rucker and Corbin Sadler.
Sawyer Moore chipped in five total tackles while Carter Humphrey had three stops.
Wyatt Groppe and Stiers also added a tackle for the Bearcat defense.
Sullivan running back Mark Jennings led the Eagles with 188 yards rushing on 14 carries and was followed by Braxton Breen’s 86 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Hermann will host St. Clair this Friday night at Bearcat Memorial Stadium with senior night taking place prior to kickoff for Hermann football, cross country, band and football cheerleaders.
