Dutchgirl volleyball trio earns postseason honors

Although their season ended in the semifinals of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 9 Girls Volleyball Tournament at the hands of St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs, Jamie Ridenhour’s Owensville Dutchgirls had three players earn postseason honors following voting from coaches within the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) and Class 3, District 9 Tournament.

Junior Lilly Sample was named an All-FRC 2nd Team selection while also earning All-District 1st Team nods from both sets of coaches.

Senior Clara Julius earned second-team honors from both the FRC and Class 3, District 9 Tournament while junior Mya Vandegriffe was selected to the All-District 2nd Team.

All-FRC 2nd Team members along with Julius and Sample included New Haven’s Megan Hoerstkamp, Sullivan’s Reya Rochleau, Union’s Morgan Sherwood, St. Clair’s Addy DeClue, Hermann’s Kalli Landolt, St. James’ Brynlee Costoplos and Sullivan’s Abby Record.

Leading the Dutchgirls with 271 kills, Sample recorded a season-best 19 kills against Eminence at the Rolla Tournament.

She also reached double-digit kills in matches against New Haven (17), Rolla (17), St. James (15), Washington (14), Fatima (12), Salem (10), Hermann (10) and Blair Oaks (10).

Serving up 46 aces which was second on the team behind Jenna Hoffman’s 50, Sample’s best match behind the serving line came at the Dig for Life Tournament in Cape Girardeau when she served six aces against Sikeston.

She also had five aces against Belle and Oak Ridge to go along with four aces against St. Clair.

Posting 22 blocks on the season, Sample had two in matches throughout the season against Belle, Parkway South, Malden, Rolla, Rockwood Summit, Eminence and Blair Oaks.

Recording a total of 405 digs, that total was second on the team to Julius’ team-leading 425 digs.

Reaching double-digs in 21 matches, the Dutchgirl junior reached 20 digs in five of those matches with a season-high 26 digs against Rolla in a five-set victory over the Lady Bulldogs on their home court.

Sample also broke the 20-dig threshold against Salem (24), Eminence (23), Fatima (20) and Blair Oaks (20).

Dishing out 15 assists on the season, Sample recorded a season-best two dimes against New Haven.

Joining Sample on the All-District 1st Team were Sullivan’s Ava Blankenship, St. Clair’s Kaylee Brandt, Sullivan’s Karlee Head, St. Clair’s Kylee Bernard, Cuba’s Jaylen Haffer and St. Clair’s Lindsay Rampani.

Whenever she was not keeping balls from hitting the floor racking up a team-leading 425 digs, Julius contributed 18 service aces during her senior season in an Owensville Dutchgirl volleyball uniform.

Julius’ season-high of three aces came against Parkway South at the Dig for Life Tournament in Cape Girardeau.

Reaching double digits in dig during 26 of their 36 matches, Julius posted a season-high 25 digs on her home court against Rolla during their five-set victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

She also surpassed 20 digs against New Haven with 23 and in their season-opening match against Linn with 21.

Adding 34 assists during her senior season, Julius dished out a season-best three against Fatima.

Julius also had two assists in matches against Licking, Sikeston, St. James, St. Clair, Rolla, Hermann, Mid-Buchanan, Eminence, Blair Oaks, Sullivan and New Haven.

Vandegriffe did the bulk of her damage at the net leading the team with 85 blocks and posting 172 kills which was second on the team to Sample’s 271 kills.

Posting double-digits kills in four matches, Vandegriffe recorded a season-best 13 kills against Rolla while also adding 11 kills against St. James and 10 kills each in matches against Fatima and New Haven.

Serving up 22 aces during her junior season, Vandegriffe posted a season-high eight aces against Salem while also posting three aces during FRC volleyball action against St. James.

Leading the Dutchgirls with 85 total blocks, she posted a season-high seven rejections against Blair Oaks while also recording five blocks in matches against Scott City and Rolla.

Vandegriffe also had four blocks in matches against Linn, Belle, St. James, St. Clair, Hermann, Eminence, Union and New Haven.

Adding 78 digs to her list of junior-year accomplishments, Vandegriffe recorded a season-best seven against Salem while also posting five digs in matches against Fatima, Rolla, Hermann and Blair Oaks.

All-District 2nd Team selections along with Julius and Vandegriffe included Record, DeClue, Rochleau, Salem’s Addison Fulton and Sullivan’s Andi Giebler.

Those also named to the All-FRC 1st Team included Blankenship, Pacific’s Ilana Reeder, Brandt, Hermann’s Ashlyn Hughes, Head, Pacific’s Paydin Todahl, Union’s Rilynn Wingenbach, Hermann’s Kealie Lane and St. Clair’s Kylie Barnard.

Blankenship was also named the FRC Player of the Year.
