Second-half run dooms Kramme’s Dutchgirls at Rolla

ROLLA — Trailing 25-15 at halftime of the opening game of the 2025 Blue Fish Shootout at Rolla High School, Matt Kramme’s young Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team kept themselves in the game against Russellville’s Lady Indians in spite of 20 first-half turnovers.

Able to get within nine points in a Cylee Reed 3-pointer at the 7:05 mark of the third quarter, Owensville was then outscored 40-8 the rest of the way during their season-opening 67-26 loss to Russellville.

“We knew number 23 (K’Lea Bassnet) was a good shooter and she simply got hot and we didn’t have an answer for her,” Kramme said. “Part of that was us getting tired while trying to get our legs under us during the first game of the season.”

Down 4-0 with 7:36 for the opening quarter, a Piper Koelling free throw got the Dutchgirls on the board cutting the Russellville lead to 4-1 with 7:27 for the first quarter.

After a 6-0 Russellville run that bumped their lead to 10-1 at the 5:00 mark of the opening quarter, a bucket from Cameron Ryerson along with two free throws each from Lainey Moss and Abbey Quilacio pulled the orange and black back within seven points at 14-7 with 2:11 for the first quarter.

Ryerson capped the first-quarter scoring with a bucket at the 1:30 mark leaving Owensville trailing the Lady Indians 18-9 after eight minutes of basketball.

Second-quarter action felt like a busy trading session on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange with both teams exchanging points throughout the entirety of the second quarter.

Entering halftime trailing 25-15, Owensville was able to get two points each in the second quarter out of Cambell Schulte, Koelling and Quilacio.

Answering a Bassnet 3-pointer to open the second half, Quilacio canned a shot from downtown pulling the Dutchgirls back to within single digits against the Lady Indians by a score of 27-18 with 7:05 for the third quarter.

Outscored 21-5 the rest of the third quarter, Owensville suddenly found themselves looking up at a 48-26 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

Unable to score during the final eight minutes of the game, the orange and black dropped game one of the Matt Kramme era of Dutchgirl basketball.

Connecting on two third-quarter 3-pointers, Quilacio led the Dutchgirls with a team-high 10 points to go along with two rebounds and an assist.

Ryerson was next in the scoring column putting in four of her six points in the first quarter. She also grabbed five rebounds and recorded two steals.

Koelling and Reed each added three points for Owensville while both players also recorded two steals.

Moss and Schulte each rounded out the Dutchgirl scoring with two points.

Adding to her two points, Moss added seven points, three steals, an assist and a blocked shot to her two first-quarter free throws.

Bassnet led Russellville with a game-high double double of 32 points, 10 steals, six rebounds and three assists.

Karsyn Duncan also reached double digits for the Lady Indians netting 12 of her 17 points in the first half.

Audra Whittle nearly finished with a triple double recording seven points, seven steals and six assists.

Facing Chamois’ Lady Pirates on the road last night (Tuesday) in Osage County, Kramme’s Dutchgirls will then have nearly two weeks to prepare for their home and Four Rivers Conference (FRC) opener against St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs at Owensville High School with a 5:30 p.m., tip time for junior-varsity girls action.
