Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchgirl basketball teams coached by Matt Kramme and Kayla Huebner were both on hunts for hardware last week during tournament action in St. Clair for Kramme’s seventh-grade Dutchgirls and Washington for Huebner’s eighth-grade Dutchgirls.
Falling 19-15 in double overtime against Pacific’s Lady Indians during semifinal action last Wednesday, Huebner’s eighth-grade Dutchgirls looked to close out their tournament week in Washington with a victory against Union’s Lady Wildcats in the third-place game last Thursday night.
Tied at 2-2 midway through the first quarter, Owensville ended the first six minutes on a 9-0 run before eventually taking a 16-7 lead into halftime.
Doubling their first-half point total in the second half, Huebner’s Dutchgirls went on to claim the third-place plaque following a 32-15 victory over Union.
Trinity Thomas led Owensville scoring five of her game-high nine points in the first quarter.
Zoie Barnes followed close behind with eight points to go along with six points from Jayde Weirich.
Allison Evans added all five of her points in the second quarter in addition to two points apiece from Adelyn McDonald and Aubrey Mogensen.
During their 19-15 loss in double overtime to Pacific in the Tom Todd Tournament semifinals, Evans led the Dutchgirls scoring all five of her points in the first half.
Weirich and Thomas each added four points followed by two points from Madisyn Skornia in the fourth quarter.
First-round action in Washington saw the Dutchgirls hand St. Clair a 36-12 loss behind 24 points from Thomas.
Weirich added six of her nine points in the second half to go along with three points from Skornia.
Over in St. Clair, Kramme’s seventh-grade Dutchgirls battled their way back to a chance at hardware last Thursday night in the consolation championship game against the host Lady Bulldogs.
Turning back the host Lady Bulldogs 31-17, Kennedy Reams led the Dutchgirls with 14 points against St. Clair followed by eight points from Ella Niederer.
Braylee Maupin, Addi Meyer and Ragen Tucker each added two points while Kambria Krupp and Jolie Vandegriffe each chipped in one point on a free throw.
Consolation semifinal action against Pacific during their 26-18 victory saw Reams show the way with nine points followed by five points from Meyer and four markers from Niederer.
Lexi Ragain added a fourth-quarter 3-pointer for three points followed by two points from Alexis Christensen and a free throw from Vandegriffe.
Reams also led the Dutchgirls with nine points during first-round action against Washington in their 37-19 loss to the Lady Blue Jays.
She was followed with six points from Niederer and three from Meyer.
Hosting St. James in the annual daytime doubleheader between the two schools yesterday (Tuesday), OMS’ Dutchgirls will face Pacific tomorrow (Thursday) on the road before competing in tournament action at St. James for the seventh graders and in Owensville for the eighth graders.
