HERMANN — Sweeping St. James in their final match of pool play last Monday night, Jamie Ridenhour’s Owensville Dutchgirl volleyball team earned an early shot at Hermann’s Lady Bearcats last Thursday night in the consolation championship match of the 70th Hermann Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
Splitting the first two sets, a decisive third set was needed to decide where in Gasconade County the consolation championship plaque would be going.
After a Joleen Braun kill gave Owensville a 16-15 lead in game three, Hermann scored 10 of the final 11 points to take the match in three sets by scores of 25-20, 24-26 and 25-17.
Lilly Sample led the Dutchgirls against Hermann with eight kills followed by Braun with six kills and five apiece from Rachel Koepke and Mya Vandegriffe.
Clarice Krupp and Riley Grube also added four kills against the Lady Bearcats.
Jenna Hoffman served the lone ace of the match for the Dutchgirls against Hermann.
Vandegriffe showed the way for Owensville with four blocks while Sample had a team-leading 18 digs against Hermann.
Clara Julius also reached double digits in the dig department with 13 followed by Hoffman (9), Clara Brune (8), Krupp (7), Vandegriffe (5), Koepke (3), Braun (2), Reece Hampton (2) and Grube (1).
Brune also dished out a team-leading 13 assists while Hampton also reached double digits with 11 dimes.
Closing out pool play last Monday night in Hermann against St. James, the Dutchgirls took both sets from the Lady Tigers 25-12 and 25-14 behind four kills apiece from Vandegriffe and Grube.
Of Owensville’s 20 aces against St. James, Hoffman served up six to lead the team followed by four from Brune and three each from Brailie Crosby and Grube.
Vandegriffe had three blocks against the Lady Tigers while Crosby posted a team-leading eight digs.
Adding to her team-leading 13 assists against Hermann, Brune also dished out nine assists against St. James.
Swept in both sets 25-12 and 25-22 against Washington, Koepke and Sample recorded four kills apiece while Brune, Julius and Hoffman each served an ace against the Lady Blue Jays.
Grube led the Dutchgirls with three blocks against Washington while Julius posted a match-high 12 digs.
Brune showed the way with seven assists followed by three from Hampton and two apiece from Ava Schulte and Hoffman.
Falling 25-12 and 25-6 in their opening match of pool play at Hermann against St. Francis Borgia, Owensville got four kills from Sample while Schulte served the lone ace of the match for the Dutchgirls against the Lady Knights.
Braun, Hoffman and Sample each led the Dutchgirls with four digs while Schulte dished out a team-leading six assists against Borgia.
Owensville also competed over the weekend at the Rolla Tournament as statistics from that action was not available at press time.
Facing Hermann last night (Tuesday) in a rematch from the consolation championship game at Hermann, Owensville will host Union tomorrow (Thursday) night in Four Rivers Conference (FRC) action.
