Donor family meets recipient’s family at ‘Celebrate Life’ event. Their families — linked forever by a bond few could image — met for the first time Sunday during a “Surprise 5K” walk and run in Owensville to benefit the Mid-America Transplant program’s Celebrate Life campaign. Chris McDougald, Lebanon, Mo., (facing camera) embraces Brett Palmer of Owensville as their respective wives, Danielle Palmer (left) and Stephanie McDougald reach out to greet each other with a hug. The McDougald’s son, Ki, 3, died Oct. 29, 2019, from injuries in a “freak” all-terrain vehicle crash three days earlier. The Palmer’s son, Truett, born with a genetic heart condition, received Ki’s heart the following day. Truett would live another year before what was described by his mother as a common “bug” caused his death on Nov. 3, 2020. The Palmers had been at their’s son’s one-year transplant checkup when he fell ill. Truett’s transplanted heart from the McDougald’s son was healthy. A “common ailment” causing a lung infection was cited as his cause of death at the age of 3 years and 8 months. As friends and family of the Truetts waited to begin the 5K fund-raiser, the families of two boys — forever linked together through organ donation — embraced. Then walked together.

“What’s UP” is the theme for this year’s Owensville High School (OHS) fall homecoming activities which will culminate Friday night with Four Rivers Conference (FRC) football action between the host Dutchmen and Pacific’s Indians. OHS students on this year’s homecoming court (from left) include Audrey Quilacio (sophomore), Faith Lange (senior), Anna Heidbrink (senior), Kayden Wood (senior) and Brynn Wright (freshman). Not pictured was Mallory Eberlin (junior). Spirit days will continue throughout the remainder of the week with a campus-wide parade being held Friday at 10 a.m., beginning at OHS and passing by the OMS and OES buildings. A pep assembly will also be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., (weather permitting) at Dutchmen Field. Tail-GREAT-ing will start at 4:30 p.m., in the OHS parking lot with coronation taking place at approximately 6:30 p.m., prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff.
